About Us
The Field Group (In Norwegian: Feltgruppa) is a research group dedicated to exploring, challenging, and advancing fieldwork within sports science. With expertise in pedagogy, sociology, psychology, sports medicine, and physiology, we cover an interdisciplinary approach to fieldwork. The ambition of the Field Group is to strengthen the research profile in fieldwork and practice-oriented research at the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences. We aim to expand the boundaries of communicating relatable research with real-world impact. Through monthly meetings and workshops, the Field Group strategically works to create innovative methods and concrete contributions to addressing societal challenges in areas such as mental health, sustainability, social justice, education, and talent development.

The name "Field Group" emphasizes the inclusion of all researchers participating in various forms of fieldwork or practice-oriented contexts to generate or collect data. The diversity of sports sciences at the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences is represented in the group, and the common feature is that we venture out and meet people—practitioners, athletes, professionals—in their own environments.&
The Field Group involves collaboration and mutual support for researchers using this type of design in their projects, where the life world of individuals and groups serves as research contexts and workspaces. Together, we address challenges and approaches related to ethics and the researcher’s role in the field, co-production of knowledge with participants in the environment, concrete strategies for observation and participation in both extreme and normal contexts, amplifying the voices of marginalized individuals in research dissemination, analytical approaches to data we produce, as well as various forms of theorising in our projects.
Activities include presentations, feedback on articles, workshops, exploratory field activities in various environments, and joint projects. The group also communicates the latest knowledge from ongoing projects to research colleagues and the public. Regine Haraldsen and Niels Boysen Feddersen coordinate the Field Group from the Department of Teacher Education and Outdoor Studies.
Research for the Field—and the Future!
Research Areas
The Field Group comprises members researching diverse areas within sports science. We share a common ambition to address challenges in the practice field. The interdisciplinary nature of the group is reflected in members conducting research in (teacher) education, outdoor life, disability, talent development, elite sports, physical performance, sports medicine, and mental health care. Methodologically, members use action research, (auto-)ethnography, physiological testing, sports medical testing, observations, interviews, and focus groups.
