Background and experience

Elisabeth is teaching outdoor education and holds a master's degree from NIH in 2014. She previously worked as a teacher at UiT The Arctic University of Norway, have had project engagements in the Norwegian "Skiforeningen", and also worked as a natureguide at Svalbard.

The recent reforms in the Norwegian early childhood/primary/secondary education curriculum explicitly highlight the inclusion of Sámi perspectives across various subjects. In this context, one of several suggested educational practices is to include Sámi traditional practitioners in teaching activities. Against this backdrop, this paper explores the perspectives of five Sámi practitioners, concentrating on their experiences and pedagogical practices when engaging students of various ages and kindergarten children in Sámi culture in a nature-based setting. The study reveals the practitioners’ arguments for sharing their culture and skills through such learning activities and their suggestions for inclusion in teaching practices. The qualitative-based research methodology comprises semi-structured interviews with Sámi practitioners who are involved in different cooperative projects within our region. These different practitioners offer learners the chance to engage with Sámi nature-based traditional practices by participating in activities in close collaboration with reindeer herders, duodji (handicraft) practitioners, coastal Sámi caretakers, and similar cultural educators in an outdoor setting. This study advocates for the significance of involving Sámi traditional practitioners and Sámi practices on all educational levels and proposes that nature-based activities are of specific value in such practices.

Recent leadership research has demonstrated a need for better understanding the process of becoming a leader because it might be qualitatively different to being a leader. If so, there is likely to be a need for pedagogies designed deliberately to support first-time outdoor leadership experiences and any such pedagogies must be informed by the needs of first-time leaders. Becoming a leader in outdoor educational settings involves moving from the relative equality of being one participant among several in a group to a position of some influence in the group. This paper draws on empirical data from in-depth semi-structured interviews with adult outdoor education (friluftsliv) students in Norway to explore factors influencing initial leadership experiences in a formal educational setting. We found that becoming an outdoor leader involves transformations that can be complicated by the educational setting. We discuss implications for pedagogical approaches to outdoor leadership development in formal education settings.

Den Norske Turistforening (DNT) har bidratt til, at det er en lang tradisjon i Norge for å dra på tur naturen, og siden 1868 har DNT gjort en stor innsats for å gjøre naturen mer tilgjengelig. DNT tilbyr i dag mer enn 500 hytter som kan benyttes av alle som har lyst til å oppleve norsk natur. I løpet av de siste årene har DNT opplevd en økt interesse for å overnatte på hyttene (Den Norske Turistforenings årsrapport, 2019). Selv om DNT har en lang historie og det er en positiv utviklingstrend i bruken av DNT-hyttene, er det begrenset med forskningsbasert kunnskap om fenomenet. For å øke kunnskapen på dette feltet har UiT Norges arktiske universitet, i samarbeid med Sydansk Universitet, gjennomført forskningsprosjektet ”Utvikling av hyttefriluftsliv i Norge”. Prosjektets formål er å undersøke fenomenet for å styrke kunnskapsgrunnlaget for utvikling av hyttefriluftsliv for offentlig tilgjengelige hytter. Et styrket kunnskapsgrunnlag skal bidra til at det i enda større grad kan skapes attraktive rammer for alle som ønsker å dra på hyttetur. Prosjektet søker mot å besvare følgende fem grunnleggende forskningsspørsmål: <ol 1> <li> Hvem er hyttebrukerne?</li> <li>Hvilke motiver for hyttefriluftsliv har brukerne?</li> <li>Hvordan brukes hyttene?</li> <li>Hvilke omgivelsesmæssige, sosiale og organisatoriske rammer for hyttefriluftsliv foretrekker brukerne?</li> <li>Hvilken betydning har korona-pandemien hatt for brukernes opplevelser av å benytte hyttene?</li> </ol> Økt innsikt i disse spørsmålene vil bidra til en ytterligere kvalifisering av utviklingen av hyttefriluftslivet i Norge.
