Mapping and developing developmental environments for young athletes in football and dance, with a focus on well-being and performance.

Purpose

The purpose of the project is to develop more sustainable high-performance environments for young football players and dancers, in which development, performance, and well-being are supported. The project is guided by the G.R.E.E.N. framework: Growth Mindset, Resilience, Educated, Energetic, and Nurturing. We aim to identify the characteristics of high-quality developmental environments and examine how coaches, instructors, and organizations can contribute to creating environments that support both performance development and athletes’ well-being.

A central aim is to develop and pilot an intervention in collaboration with coaches and educators, with a particular focus on strengthening resilience and supportive practices. The project will investigate how such an intervention may contribute to changes over time in young athletes’ perceptions of their environment, stress, well-being, and performance development.

Project Description

The project employs both quantitative and qualitative methods and comprises three studies. The first study examines how young athletes and dancers perceive their developmental environment, as well as how coaches and instructors assess the environment and the athletes’ potential for development. Findings from this study will inform the second study, in which the intervention will be developed through a co-design process involving coaches and instructors.

In the third study, the intervention will be implemented and evaluated using a longitudinal, quasi-experimental design. This study will examine changes over time in athletes’ perceptions of their developmental environment, stress, well-being, and performance development.
