Program

Presentation, 50 min

In sport, assessment and management of body composition (BC) have been important aspects of performance preparation and evaluation. While total body weight significantly influences performance in numerous sports, lean body mass and fat mass are considered even more pivotal performance variables. While BC assessment can aid athletes in enhancing their body composition and potentially improving performance, the derived measures may also pose risks, leading to problematic low energy availability. This can manifest in issues such as body dissatisfaction, disordered eating, and REDs.

During this session, you will be introduced to a supplementary paper from the IOC REDs expert group, on BC management.

This includes

  • insights into current BC assessment and management practices internationally
  • the documented association between BC and sport performance
  • the new recommendations for BC assessment and management. The latter signifies a paradigm shift in sports, with a focus on safeguarding athletes from the potential adverse effects of low energy availability and REDs.
