INTENSIVE Lifestyle interventions for THE TREATMENT OF SEVERE OBESITY

Formål

The prevalence of obese people in the world has reached epidemic proportions and is considered a threat to the public health. In Norway one out of five is defined as oBESE, and ABOUT 100 000 are assumed to be morbidly obese. Overweight and obesity are multifactorial conditions and are associated with negative effects on both physical and psychological health, together with reduced lifetime expectancy. In addition to being a burden on public health, obesity and overweight also bring along considerable direct and indirect economic costs for the community. Research has shown that a weight reduction of 10 % can lead to significant health benefits. This weight reduction can be achieved through conventional treatment programs (lifestyle interventions), medical treatment and/or bariatric surgery. Several studies have shown that lifestyle intervention can lead to sufficient acute weight reduction and improvements in weight-related conditions/diseases, but research related to the long term effects on the other hand is rather sparse and the results are less satisfying. Studies including only persons with morbid obesity are even fewer.

Weight reduction and weight maintenance are complex phenomenon affected by behavior, genes and environmental factors, and permanent change in lifestyle is hard work.  To increase the probability of long-lasting treatment effects on weight, physical and psychological health, it is important to offer patients with morbid obesity individually adapted treatment programs. To create more effective treatment options it is therefore important to increase the knowledge about what factors are critical/of vital importance for succeeding in different weight reduction programs. The aim is to increase the knowledge about the effects of an in-house program for the treatment of morbidly obese patients.
