EuroFIT

Formell tittel

European Fans in Training: a multicenter randomised controlled trial of a gender-sensitised programme to increase physical activity and reduce sedentary time delivered to men aged 30-65 in elite European football clubs

Formål

The main aim of the EuroFIT trial is to determine whether the EuroFIT programme can help men who do not achieve current recommendations for physical activity, to achieve an increase of at least 1000 steps per day of moderate intensity activity and to achieve an average decrease of at least 25 minutes per day spent expending less than 1.5 MET at least 12 months after their participation in EuroFIT.

Prosjektbeskrivelse

This is a two arm, stratified, individually randomized within clubs, pragmatic, controlled trial with an accompanying process evaluation across 4 European countries. We will measure baseline values, and repeat measurements immediately post programme (around 12 weeks after baseline) and 12 months after baseline at club stadiums using teams of trained fieldworkers.

The trial will be conducted at 15 football clubs in Portugal, Norway, the Netherlands and England (UK). In each country, 60-80 participants per club will be recruited.

The EuroFIT programme is a club-based program that aims to improve individual total physical activity (to achieve recommended levels) and to decrease sedentary time. The programme will include both ‘classroom’ sessions and club-based physical activity sessions. It will incorporate a novel low-cost pocket-worn device, which can accurately measure daily sedentary behaviour and physical activity and an interactive, game-based, smartphone application. Club coaches/facilitators will deliver the programme in club stadia.

Primary outcome measures are to decrease total sedentary time and to increase total physical activity at 12 months measured with ActivPAL. Secondary outcomes are changes in diet, body weight, BMI, waist circumference, diastolic and systolic blood pressure, cardio-metabolic disease risk biomarkers related to glucose, insulin, HBA1c, lipids and liver function, self-reported general physical health and quality of life, and self-reported physical activity and sedentary time. Furthermore, cost effectiveness will be assessed and a process evaluation will be conducted.
