Table of contents

Introduction

This course serves as an introduction to advanced studies in exercise and sport biology and sport performance analysis. Building upon knowledge in physiology acquired at the bachelor’s level, the course focuses on evaluating human performance within the framework of the research areas covered. Additionally, the course aims to enhance skills in critical evaluation of scientific papers, presentation, group work and synthesis of complex research papers.

Prerequisite

No subjects in the program.

Admission to the course

This course is exclusively available to students enrolled in our master's program, along with international exchange students.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student can

  • integrate knowledge of metabolism and physiology in evaluations of human performance to address specific challenges in the research, clinical and coaching professional environments.
  • identify key elements, strengthen basic knowledge and analytical capacity, and condense important information from complex research papers (summarize).
  • present and critically discuss results from key research in the area.
  • explain the strengths and limitations of key methodologies for the study of human performance
  • assess forms of collaboration and knowledge sharing in an innovative context within human performance
  • translate scientifically based theory into practical advice adjusted to the target group and context

Learning methods and activities

The course comprises 6 seminars together with the master “Idrettsfysiologi og bevegelseslære”. Each seminar begins with an introduction to a specific topic before students, in groups of 3, read and present a related article. The presentation will be followed by a questions-and-answer session and group discussions.

In addition to the specific topics, students are required to participate in at least one of two workshops on innovation and development during the semester. These workshops are organized in collaboration between Department of Physical Performance and external partners. The primary objectives of these workshops are to identify the application of scientific knowledge in an innovation context, bridging academia, organizations, and industry.

Work requirements

In order to take the final written exam

  • Students are required to actively participate in 5 of the 6 student presentation classes.
  • Students will work in groups to prepare and present a review of three original research articles provided during the course. All presentations must be approved. If a presentation fails to meet the required standards, a second opportunity will be provided.
  • Students must attend the first workshop on innovation and development, while the second is voluntary.

Assessment/exam

Individual written exam (school), 2 hours, graded A-F.
