Introduction

The course is an in-depth exploration of the coach's interaction with the environment, with a special emphasis on the coach's pedagogical activities and social competence. The purpose is to conduct a critical examination of key aspects of one's own and others' sports practices to develop an ethically grounded, effective, and reflective practice. Students are strongly encouraged to combine theory with practical experience as a coach, sports psychology advisor, instructor, or teacher.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student should be able to:

  • Explain how specific historical, cultural, and social contexts shape and influence identity development, sports practices, and coaching activities.
  • Explain how social interactions and micropolitical actions impact sports practices and the everyday life of coaches.
  • Discuss how dilemmas and contradictions, including issues related to sustainability and innovation, can be best addressed in sports practices and the daily lives of coaches.
  • Deliberate on the ethical aspects of one's own and others' sports practices, coaching, and mentoring activities.

Learning methods and activities

The course is based on lectures, seminars, and assignment writing.

Work requirements

Attendance to seminars is mandatory, with an 80% minimum requirement.

The seminars are dedicated to discussing and applying relevant theoretical and empirical knowledge to develop individual practical competence, particularly within each student's respective sport. Discussions will focus on linking theory to practical application and identifying specific challenges in the training and sports environment. Seminar assignments are designed to give students the opportunity to practice problem-solving, collaboration, and communication, both in written and oral form. These tasks are crafted to challenge students to apply theory to concrete situations within their own sports environment. The completion of the attendance requirement is necessary to be eligible for the final assessment.

Assessment/exam

Individual written assignment. Maximum 5000 words, including references. Graded A-F.

Please note that assignments submitted through WISEflow will undergo plagiarism checks.
