Introduction

This course gives students the tools to design and facilitate engaging, place-responsive lessons outside the classroom, in nearby environments. The course’s central focus is on developing friluftsliv lessons that are rooted in the cultural, historical, and ecological phenomena of the places in which they are located. Risk management is also a strong theme.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student should be able to

  • understand the principles of place-responsive teaching and learning
  • design and deliver a theory-based friluftsliv lesson in nearby surroundings
  • adapt teaching approaches to suit local climate and environment
  • undertake pre-activity and during-activity risk assessments

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, workshops, outdoor teaching sessions, self-directed study.

Work requirements

  • A minimum of 80 % attendance is required for all classes. 100% attendance is required for all seminar days. Active engagement in all aspects of the course is expected. Sufficient participation must be approved before final assessment.
  • Two non-graded pieces of work are required:
      • A theory-based lesson plan and risk assessment for the place-responsive friluftsliv lesson must be submitted before the principal (graded) teaching session.
      • A short teaching session to the rest of the class, midway during the course.

Assessment/exam

Evaluation comes from two forms of graded assessment:

  • A theoretically-informed outdoor learning lesson taught to the rest of the class. Graded A-F and worth 50% of final mark. This is done in pairs.
  • An essay in which students critically evaluate their own outdoor teaching performance. Graded A-F and worth 50% of final mark. This is done individually.
