Welcome to an open Guest Lecture with Dean Kriellaars!
As part of the Public Health Conference 2024, we are fortunate to host a visit from Dean Kriellaars at the Norwegian School of Sports Sciences. Dean is an associate professor at the College of Rehabilitation Sciences at the University of Manitoba and a leading researcher in the field of "physical literacy". He argues that motivation, physical skills, and the joy of movement are fundamental for meaningful participation in society, on par with traditional reading and writing skills.
The lecture is open to everyone. Welcome!
What is Physical Literacy?
Physical Literacy (also translated to bodily literacy) is about knowledge and skills in physical activity and movement. Physical Literacy is considered a key to lifelong physical activity. This means that one possesses a set ("vocabulary") of movements that include, for example, the ability to jump, run, throw, etc.
All able-bodied people should be able to perform movements at a basic level. Interestingly enough, one gains higher self-confidence from improving their movement skills. This in turn leads to a greater likelihood of participating in physical activities. What mainly deals with body motor skills and physical abilities leads to increased self-confidence, which in turn leads to increased participation in various aspects of life.
In short, Physical Literacy can be seen as the gateway to a physically active life, as it represents the human ability to assess and choose to participate in physical activity.
