We recommend that you apply for student housing as early as possible when you apply for an exchange at NSSS. You apply online through SiOs web pages, where you will also find more information on the different housing options, rules and regulations.
SIO has many housing units in Oslo and the surrounding areas, but we strongly recommend you to apply for Kringsjå, Fjellbirkeland or Sogn Student Villages (in that order), as they are the closest to NSSS. In fact, Kringsjå student village is located only 100 meters from campus.
Housing application deadline
For the autumn semester: 15 May
For the spring semester: 15 October
Housing contracts for exchange students are normally issued for the entire semester, from 1 August to 31 December, and 1 January to 31 July.
You have one week deadline to answer the housing offer given by SIO and to sign your contract and pay the deposit. All of this can be done electronically via "My pages" (more information will be given from SIO). It is important that you read the contract and appendix 1 available on SIOs webpages carefully.
If you for some reason want to move out before your contract expires, you need to give SIO notice two or three months ahead of time (depending on type of accomodation). Two or three months will be counted from the 15th or the last of the month.
All students who rent housing must pay a deposit. This will be returned after you have moved out, on condition that there is no damage to the room/furniture, that the room has been properly cleaned, and all rent has been paid.
The deposit must be paid before arrival to Norway, within one week after you get an offer from SIO. It is done electronically through "My Pages" (you will get access to this from SIO), and can be paid via credit card or via regular international bank transfer.
How to get there
The reception for Kringsjå, Fjellbirkeland and Sogn student villages is located at Kringsjå student village. You will receive your room key at the reception by showing the receipt for your housing deposit payment. The staff at the reception will give you directions to your housing.
To get to Kringsjå you take the T-bane (metro) line 6 westbound towards Sognsvann. Kringsjå is the next last stop. When you get off the T-bane at Kringsjå, cross the main road and walk down the stairs to the Kiwi grocery store. Take a right at the store. The reception is on the first building on your left.
The reception is open Monday-Friday 9:00-17:00 (with extended opening hours the week before semester start). We strongly recommend that you plan your arrival to Oslo so that you arrive within opening hours so that you can get your key for your housing.
Nice to know
Please note that none of the rooms have duvet/pillow, kitchen utensils, or curtains. Most of the rooms do not have reading lamps.
Also note that all questions on housing should be directed to firstname.lastname@example.org, not NSSS.
