Laboratory of Respiratory Physiology

Measurement of respiration.

The respiratory physiology laboratory is located within the Department for Sports Medicine and is well-served for research and teaching regarding the lungs and respiratory tract. The laboratory contains equipment for measuring lung function, lung volumes, respiratory inflammation and bronchial hyperreactivity (BHR). Measurement of other physiological variables associated with physical activity and health, such as health profile testing including measurement of cholesterol, blood pressure and body composition, is also conducted in this laboratory.

The laboratory is used for teaching students and for conducting student research projects, both internal and external . A large proportion of the research projects are carried out in collaboration with other groups at NIH, to provide a multi-disciplinary approach to topical issues. Research is undertaken on various groups of interest such as swimming and cross-country athletes, those with asthma and respiratory trauma, those with physical disabilities, as well as children and adolescents with asthma and allergies, and healthy physically active and inactive children.
