Erasmus Policy Statement - The Norwegian School of Sport Sciences

NIH is a specialised University with a national responsibility for research and higher education on sport sciences. The institutional strategy for 2020-2024 states that NIH shall have an internationalisation as an important factor in all educational programmes. NIH shall conduct research of high international quality.

Internationalisation shall contribute to enhance quality and renewal of the educational programmes at NIH. Internationalisation shall be an integrated part of NIH activity, and all programme students shall have the opportunity to take part of their degree at a foreign institution. The international office shall be a facilitator for internationalisation at the institution, both for students and academic staff.

a) Choice of partners

Inter-institutional agreements shall be based on academic cooperation and educational relevance. The portfolio of inter-institutional agreements shall reflect diversity related to language, geographic area and culture.

b) Geographical area(s)

NIH has successful bilateral learning and teaching mobility with partners in Canada and USA. NIH also has important partner institutions in Europe through Joint and double degrees (2nd cycle) and Nordplus Idrott, a Nordic network.

c) Important objectives and target groups of mobility activities

NIH would like to expand the inbound mobility in both 1st and 2nd cycle by increasing number of courses offered in English. NIH has set a target for outbound mobility to 20% within 1st cycle, and 10% within 2nd cycle. To attain this goal NIH will facilitate exchange by identifying more explicitly an exchange semester and relevant course packages at partner institutions for students in both their 1st and 2nd cycle. NIH emphasises the importance of mobility within the 3rd cycle. PhD students are encouraged to spend a period at a foreign instituion that is engaged in research cooperation with NIH. NIH facilitates for inbound internship mobility at 2nd and 3rd cycle. Internship students are primarily from partner institutions and given admission based on jount supervision, the relevance of their research projects, and their academic performance.

d) Participation in the double/multiple/joint degrees

NIH has been a participating partner in three joint/double master degree programs. Erasmus Mundus Master in Transcultural European Outdoor Studies (TEOS), Erasmus Mundus Master in Adapted Physical Activity (EMMAPA), and European Master in Health and Physical Activity (EMHPA).

NIH will continue being an engaged and active partner in these programs by accommodating students and staff, offering relevant modules, and engaging academic staff for teaching both at the partner institutions and at NIH.

Institutional strategy for international cooperation projects in teaching and training 

NIH is engaged in supporting international cooperation projects for innovation and good practices.

Participation in the joint master programs including joint modules and staff and student exchange promotes innovation within both teaching and learning at NIH. Joint teaching and research cooperation within the consortium will benefit the Departments involved through knowledge exchange and international perspective transferable to other activity at the department.

NIH cooperates closely with several institutions in Canada, with several projects funded trough Norwegian Ministry of Education and Research’s North America Strategy for Higher Education Cooperatio.  The projects has increased student and staff mobility and supported new intensive courses at PhD level. The project goal is to link educational activities with research training experience (i.e. workshops, seminars, intensive courses and student exchange) and serve as a model for both institutions' international cooperation.  

Modernisation Agenda - policy objectives 

NIH’s participation in the program will contribute to modernisation of the institution through:

1. Increasing attainment levels by

  • Active participation in joint degrees where innovation of teaching and learning, and cross-institutional curriculum development, enhance a common European knowledge platform within the field of Sport Sciences.
  • Closely integrate research and education in mobility and cooperation projects

2. Improving the quality and relevance of higher education by

  • Enhancing innovation and student employability through student mobility, staff exchange and strategic partnership with international institutions with relevant and complimentary expertise.
  • Facilitating staff exchange to ensure academic quality and relevance of teaching.

3. Strengthening quality through mobility and cross-border cooperation by

  • Making mobility an integral part of all the study programs.
  • Integrating the international students into the learning environment and campus life.
  • Encouraging cross-border cooperation projects initiated by academic staff.
  • Recognising credits gained abroad through quality assurance systems related to mobility and agreements, use of credit system equivalent to ECTS and DS.

4. Linking higher education, research and business for excellence and regional development by

  • Developing further cooperation with universities, schools, sport, health institutions, and national and regional authorities to promote innovation and knowledge transfer.

5. Improving governance and funding mechanisms in support of excellence by

  • Prioritising partnerships and cooperation based on academic cooperation, institutional strengths and educational relevance.
  • Connecting mobility funding to activity in facilitating mobility at each department.
