Ørnulf Seippel is professor in the sociology of sports at the Department of culture and society. He got his master (1991) and PhD (2000) from the University of Oslo. Completing his PhD, Seippel worked for eight years (1999-2007) at the Institute for social research. Research topics was mainly civil society, voluntary organizations and politics and most research projects concerned sports. From 2007 to 2010, Seippel was a professor of the sociology of sports at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), and between 2010 and 2012 he was a researcher at Norwegian Social Research (NOVA), department for youth research. Seippel's research interests are wide, but has to a large extent oriented towards the organization of sports (volunteering, professionalization), sport politics, the social meaning and significance of sports (integration, social capital, social networks) and participation and social inequality in sports and exercise.
