May has a professional background in physical activity and health and physical education from NIH. She has a master's degree (cand scient) in measuring physical activity among children and young people (2001), and a doctorate (PhD) in the prevention of obesity among children and adolescents. The doctoral thesis was a school-based intervention study (RCT) on the effect of increased physical activity and a healthy diet on weight development in children and adolescents in Norway (the HEIA study). May has previously worked as a school teacher, as a consultant in the Norwegian Directorate of Health and as an associate professor at Oslo MET. May was appointed Associate Professor at NIH / IFP in 2014
