Conference on sport for peace and development
The Norwegian Institute of International Affairs (NUPI) has the pleasure of inviting you to the conference Sports for Peace and Development? – the 2010 FIFA World Cup as a Tool for Peace and Development. Friday October 9.
| 23.09.2009
According to South Africa’s Bid Book for the 2010 World Cup, the thrust of the bid for this mega sporting event is predicated upon a strategic focus on development, nation-building and reconciliation. But can sport contribute to development, nation-building and reconciling people previously in conflict? And which conditions need to be present?
The Conference forms part of the research project Sports and Reconciliation undertaken by NUPI in conjunction with the Rafto Foundation for Human Rights since 2006, and is hosted in collaboration with the South African Embassy to the Kingdom of Norway, the Norwegian School of Sports Science (NSSS), the Norwegian Olympic and Paralympic Committee and the Confederation of Sports (NIF). It is envisaged that the Conference will generate further academic discourse and interest in research on the role of sport in reconciliation and development.
The Conference is organized as a sequel to the theme of this year’s seminar “Peace and Development; Interlinked Prospects for Africa’s Future”, hosted by NUPI and the Africa Group (African Embassies resident in Oslo), which aimed to shed light on the developmental impact of current initiatives on the continent.
Friday October 9 from 09:30 am
