Author(s)

The number of authors determines how the document is cited in the text and in the reference list. Follow the rules for each document type (books, articles etc.) to complete the citation of the examples.

In the text:

  • Without author = title
  • 1-2 author = all authors
  • 3-7 authors = all authors the first time, the next time one author and et al
  • More than 7 authors = one author and et al

In the reference list:

  • Without author = title
  • 1-7 authors = all authors
  • More than 7 authors = the 6 first authors ... last author

3-7 authors

  • In the text the first time you cite the book: (Author, author & author, year) 
    (Nilsen, Eide & Syversen, 2011)
  • In the text the next time you cite the book: (Author et al., year)
    (Nilsen et al., 2011)
  • In the reference list: All authors. (Year).

More than 7 authors

  • In the text: (Author et al., year)
    (Eide et al., 2006)
  • In the reference list: The first 6 authors … last author. (Year).
